Is Web 2.0 changing current usability and accessibility practices?

According to recent studies, an estimated 90% of Web sites and
applications suffer from usability and/or accessibility problems. This
especially applies to modern Web 2.0 applications that, partly due to
their infancy, and partly due to the increasing complexity of the
interaction models involved, are specially prone to this kind of
problems. As the user involvement in the creation of Web applications
has increased in importance, the need for usable and accessible Web
applications has become more critical.
To achieve Web usability for any class of Web products (e.g., a complex,
data-intensive application, a service, a mashup component, a community
portal, etc.), the set of relevant Web artifacts' quality attributes
must be clearly defined. Otherwise, assessment of usability is left to
the intuition or the responsibility of people who are in charge of the
process. In this sense, usability models (describing all the usability
sub-characteristics, their attributes and the relationship among them)
should be built, and Usability Evaluation Methods (UEMs) should be used
during requirements, design and implementation stages, based on these
usability models. Another major challenge in industry today is to make
the Web more accessible for everybody, including those with disabilities.
Since there is no general method for evaluating the usability and
accessibility of a Web application in all circumstances, the workshop
can contribute to clarify several concerns such as the following:

- What are the shortcomings of existing approaches for Web usability and
accessibility evaluation?
- Are current approaches adequate with respect to the new challenges
posed by modern Web 2.0 applications?
- How can the Web application usability be decomposed into a set of
measurable attributes? For example, the ISO 9126 standard decomposes
usability into five sub-characteristics. The standard does not specify
how these sub-characteristics can be effectively and efficiently measured.
- What is the suitability of existing UEMs to evaluate Web interfaces?
- What are the specific usability criteria for Web artifacts? To which
extent do they depend on the family of applications (application domain)
under consideration? Does the new family of Web 2.0 applications require
ad hoc criteria?
- How can we broaden accessibility evaluation to involve people with
disabilities? Is it possible to provide a more effective solution than
merely conforming to accessibility standards?
- What are the strengths and weaknesses of tools for automated
evaluation? For example, many accessibility tools are based on
accessibility guidelines, but vary in their interpretation of
guidelines. So these results still require human judgment. More
interestingly, are such tools suitable for the evaluation of the
so-called Rich Interfaces that characterize the modern Web scenario?
- How can the usability and accessibility of Rich Internet Applications,
mashups, community portals, or any other class of Web 2.0 applications
be assessed?

TOPICS OF INTEREST

We invite contributions discussing methodological, technical and
theoretical aspects of usability and accessibility for Web applications.
Relevant topics include, but are not limited to:

- Usability and accessibility guidelines, factors, criteria, metrics,
patterns, and recommendations.
- Ergonomic/HCI criteria and principles
- Usability and accessibility criteria for vertical domains (e.g.,
e-commerce, e-government, e-learning)
- Management of usability and accessibility requirements in Web projects
- Usability and accessibility evaluation
- Integration of usability and accessibility evaluation activities in
development processes
- Early usability evaluation (e.g., based on models, user interfaces
prototypes, etc.)
- Usability testing
- Evaluation of users' performance and satisfaction
- Tools for automatic evaluation of usability and accessibility
- User Experience
- Comparative analysis of usability/accessibility metrics
- Theoretical/empirical validation of usability/accessibility metrics
- Empirical studies
- Industrial experiences

Papers focusing on Web 2.0 applications are especially encouraged.
However, contributions focusing on more traditional Web domains are also
welcome.

SUBMISSION

Authors are invited to submit their papers by May 1, 2009. The papers
must describe completed work (8 pages maximum). Submissions will be
evaluated according to the relevance and originality of the work, as
well as with respect to their ability to generate discussions between
the participants of the workshop. All submissions must follow the
Springer-Verlag LNCS standard paper format
(http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-7-72376-0) and be
submitted electronically in PDF format through the WISE Review System
<http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=wise2009>
(https://www.easychair.org/login.cgi?conf=wise2009). Please, make sure
you select the *Web Usability and Accessibility track*
of the WISE conference for your submission. Any submission should
clearly emphasize which aspects of the paper make it relevant to the
workshop.

PUBLICATION

All papers accepted for the Workshop will be published by
Springer-Verlag in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series,
as a separate volume for the WISE Workshops. Authors of selected papers
will be invited to submmit an improved and extended version of their
papers to a special issue in a relevant journal.
